Ex-Mariners Drown Barnstormers

Two former Seattle Mariners, Carl Everett and John Halama, combined to inundate the Lancaster Barnstormers Monday evening as the Long Island Ducks captured the opener of a three-game series, 7-2, at Citibank Park.

Everett homered twice, doubled and drove in four runs while Halama faced the minimum of 18 batters over the first six innings as the Ducks won their fourth straight to start the second half.

Everett, who homered twice off Brett Evert in the right-hander's last start on Long Island, doubled home Jose Offerman, who had drawn a leadoff walk in the first inning. The long time Major League star later connected from each side of the plate in consecutive innings, belting a two-run homer off Ryan Harris in the seventh and a solo shot off Ross Peeples in the eighth.

The Ducks took a 2-0 lead off Evert (4-5) in the second on a triple by Norm Hutchins and a ground out by Damian Rolls. That lead was extended to 3-0 in the fifth when Everett drew a two-out walk, stole second and rode home on a single by Edgardo Alfonzo.

Halama (5-5) allowed an infield single to Jutt Hileman in the third inning but caught him leaving first base too soon on a 3-2 pitch to Steve Van Note. He proceeded to walk Van Note but got Chris Van Rossum to ground into a routine 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.

Mike Woods led off the fourth with a bunt single to the third base side of the mound. Halama, keeping his string of three-batter innings alive, got Danny Gonzalez to rap into a 5-4-3 DP.

Lancaster finally made a charge in the seventh. Woods slapped a double inside the bag at third and scored on Gonzalez' single to center. Jeremy Todd chopped a ball to the hole on the right side which was run down by the second baseman Offerman. His desperation throw was wild, allowing Gonzalez to take third. Felix Jose narrowed the gap to one with a sacrifice fly, but that was all the Barnstormers could muster.

Everett's two homers and a bases loaded walk to Offerman locked down the win for the Ducks.

NOTES: Lancaster has batted .241 as a team in the second half and has not homered in 34 2/3 innings...Everett has the only two-homer games against Lancaster this season...James Lira (4-3) faces Ed Yarnall (1-1) Tuesday evening at 7:05.
