
Ortiz Ninth-Inning Single Gives Bluefish Win Over Bears

NEWARK, NJ - July 16, 2007 - Shortstop Nick Ortiz delivered an RBI single to left-field in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Bridgeport Bluefish a 2-1 walk-off win over the Newark Bears on Monday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Bears have now lost five games in a row and are 0-4 to start the second half.
In the bottom of the ninth, Bears' reliever Edwin Almonte (1-3) walked right-fielder Bobby Malek to lead off the inning. Malek moved to second on a sacrifice bunt to setup Ortiz's game winning hit. Ortiz finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Bears tied the game at one in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by catcher John Pachot off of Bluefish reliever Eddy Ramos (2-2), the eventual winning pitcher. Pachot went 2-for-4 with an RBI on the night.
Bears' right-handed starter Gary Knotts allowed one unearned run on five hits and no walks in eight innings of work. He struck out four. The lone run against Knotts came in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Ortiz hit line-drive single to centerfield that skipped past the Bears' centerfielder, allowing pinch-hitter Kelington Made to score from first.
Knotts was matched by Bluefish starter Justin Sturge who went seven and one-third innings, giving up no runs on six hits and two walks, striking out six.
The Bears will continue their three game series with the Bluefish on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. Right-hander Delvis Pacheco (3-1) will take the mound for the Bears.
