Altoona Curve News Release
SOMERSET, N.J. -Abrahan Gutierrez and Matt Gorski each recorded three hits for Altoona on Wednesday night, but Somerset hit three home runs and totaled 11 hits to edge the Curve, 5-4, at TD Bank Ballpark. It was the second consecutive loss for Altoona to open the series, dropping the Curve's record to 30-27 and knocking them into second place in the Southwest Division.
Gorski finished the day 3-for-4 with three singles and a run scored, while Gutierrez was 3-for-5 with a three-run double. With the Curve trailing 4-0 in the top of the seventh inning, Altoona loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a Drew Maggi single to set up the two-out double from Gutierrez off reliever Blas Castano. The Curve added a run on an Andres Alvarez ground out in the top of the eighth off Castano.
Somerset jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Trey Sweeney RBI-double off Curve starter Jared Jones. Jones tossed 3.2 innings in the outing, allowing one score on five hits, three walks, and six strikeouts.
The Patriots would power home runs in three consecutive innings from the fifth through seventh innings to put the game out of reach. T.J. Rumfield homered off Noe Toribio in the fifth, a two-run shot that was the lone blemish in Toribio's 1.1 innings tossed.
Justin Meis entered in the sixth and gave up a solo shot to Sweeney before Austin Wells knocked the third home run of the game in the seventh inning. Meis surrendered three hits in two frames of work out of the bullpen.
Oliver Garcia tossed a scoreless eighth inning for Altoona with two strikeouts, as Altoona combined to strike out 14 batters in the loss, matching its most in a nine-inning game this season.
Altoona continues a 12-game road trip on Thursday evening with the Somerset Patriots, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, at 6:35 p.m. Somerset will send RHP Yoendrys Gomez to the mound with the Curve sending RHP Aaron Shortridge to the mound.
