
Patriots Defeat Bluefish 9-8 In 10 Innings

BRIDGEPORT, CT- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish 9-8 in ten innings at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday evening.
Somerset broke a 8-8 tie with a run in the top of the tenth inning to take the 9-8 lead when second baseman Teuris Olivares led off with single up the middle, stole second and then stole third and scored on a Bluefish throwing error.
The Patriots struck first with five runs in the top of the second inning to take an early 5-0 lead. Leftfielder Jose Morban reached on a Bluefish fielding error on a one out groundball to second and moved into scoring position on a two out single to center by shortstop Elliott Ayala. Olivares then crushed a three run home run to left, his 8th of the 2007 season. Designated hitter Jason Romano followed with a walk and came around to score on a RBI triple to right center field by centerfielder Mike Lockwood. Lockwood would then score on a passed ball.
The Bluefish answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning to cut the lead to 5-1 when rightfielder Bobby Malek struck out but reached on a wild pitch and scored on a one out RBI double to left center field by third baseman Jay Caligiuri.
Somerset added a run in the top of the fourth inning to make it 6-1 when Ayala lined a one out double into the left field corner and scored on RBI single to center by Olivares.
Bridgeport scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning cutting the Patriots lead to 6-3 when Malek reached with two outs on a Patriots fielding error on a fly ball to left and scored on a two run home run to left by Caligiuri, his 10th of the year.
The Patriots answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning to make it 7-3 when Morban crushed a one out solo home run to straight away center field, his 5th of the year.
Somerset added another run in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 8-3 when Olivares led off with double to right center field and scored following two passed balls by the Bluefish catcher.
The Bluefish got two runs back on back-to-back homers in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Patriots lead to 8-5. First baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke hit a two out solo home run to center, his 21st of the year and then Malek followed with a solo home run to right, his 6th of the year.
Bridgeport tied the game at 8-8 with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Bluefish loaded the bases on a two out pop-up single in the infield by Hoorelbeke, a single to first by Malek and when third baseman Lou Lucca reached a fielder's choice to shortstop. Catcher Sandy Aracena drew a walk that forced in Hoorelbeke and then second baseman Steve Hine hit a two run single to right that scored both Malek and Lucca to tie the game.
Patriots closer R.D. Spiehs (2-2) picked up the win, throwing two scoreless innings allowing no hits while striking out one and walking one. Bluefish closer Eddy Ramos (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing one unearned run on two hits while walking none and striking out two in two innings pitched.
With the win the Patriots improved to 10-8 in the second half and 45-36 on the 2007 season while the Bluefish dropped to 8-10 and 43-38 overall.
The Somerset Patriots 10th Anniversary Season presented by Ford will continue Tuesday, July 31st when the Patriots return to Commerce Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the Bridgeport Bluefish. The game includes a chance for fans to Win $10,000 at the ballpark courtesy of Heineken Premium Light. The game is also Simpsons Night.
