Bears Fall to Barnstormers, 12-10

NEWARK, NJ - July 31, 2007 - The Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the Newark Bears 12-10 Tuesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Newark jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first two innings. Center-fielder Keith Reed hit a two-run home run, his 12th of the season, in the bottom of the first inning. In the second inning, designated hitter Joey Gomes added a solo home run, shortstop Ramon Castro hit an RBI double, and second baseman Javier Colina hit an RBI single for the fifth Bears run.

Lancaster came back with six runs of their own beginning with four in the bottom of the second inning when first baseman Jeremy Todd and catcher Lance Burkhart each hit two-run home runs. Todd and third baseman Felix Martinez added RBI singles in the bottom of the third inning to give Lancaster a 6-5 advantage.

The Bears tied the game at nine in the top of the sixth inning when Castro scored on a throwing error, and third baseman Corey Smith hit an RBI double. They would take a 10-9 lead in the top of the seventh on Gomes second home run of the night, his seventh of the season, however Lancaster tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Martinez scored on a wild pitch. With the score tied at ten in the bottom of the eighth, designated hitter Eric Crozier and Burkhart hit RBI singles to give Lancaster the 12-10 lead.

For the Bears Gomes ended the game 3-for-5 including a single, and two solo home runs, while Reed and Colina also added three hits for the Bears. Lancaster was lead by left-fielder Dominick Ambrosini finishing the game 4-for-5 with three-runs scored and two RBI. Todd went 2-for-4 with one run scored and three RBI.

Brendon Davis (0-3) took the loss allowing three runs on six hits in three relief innings, while Ryan Harris (2-0) earned the victory tossing one scoreless inning yielding only one hit. Derrick DePriest picked up his 12th save of the season surrendering one hit striking out one in the ninth inning.

The Bears and Barnstormers will continue the three-game series with game two Wednesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Harold Eckert (0-0) will take the mound for the Bears against Josh Stevens (7-4) for the Barnstormers.
