Patriots Beat Ducks 7-1 in Series Opener

Central Islip, NY - The Somerset Patriots (30-17, 76-41) defeated the Long Island Ducks (24-22, 54-63) 7-1 Thursday evening from Bethpage Ballpark in the series opener.

In the top of the second inning third baseman Corey Smith laced a RBI double to give the Patriots an early 1-0 lead which they would never relinquish.

Left fielder Aharon Eggleston roped a RBI single in the top of the third inning to expand Somerset's advantage to 2-0.

Shortstop Bill Hall cranked a solo home run (14) to dead center field as the Ducks cut the deficit in half making the score 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the top of the fifth inning pitcher Bill Murphy threw a wild pitch that plated designated hitter Yunesky Sanchez to make the contest 3-1 in favor of Somerset.

The Patriots plated four runs in the eighth inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead which would be the final score. Shortstop Angel Sanchez registered a RBI double while second baseman Bobby Stevens launched a three run home run (6) to left field as all four funs came with two outs.

Derell McCall (6-0) earned the win tossing 5.2 innings while surrendering just one run and four hits. Bill Murphy (2-14) suffered the loss as he lasted six innings while allowing three runs on eight hits.
