FRISCO, Texas - The Southland Conference and the Sugar Land Skeeters have agreed to a two-year contract that will return the league's 2015 and 2016 baseball tournaments to Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas, the Southland and the professional team announced Thursday.
Constellation Field, home of the Skeeters, an Atlantic League minor league team, was the site of the 2013 Southland Tournament. The 7,500-seat stadium opened prior to the start of the 2012 baseball season also has the ability to host football, soccer, lacrosse and concerts.
"We are very excited to bring the Southland Tournament back to Constellation Field, a first-class and fan-friendly baseball venue for our teams and their fans," Southland Conference commissioner Tom Burnett said. "Our coaches and student-athletes had a great time in the facility last season, and we look forward to providing another great college baseball postseason experience in 2015 and 2016. We also appreciate everyone in the Skeeters organization, as well as other Sugar Land officials, who worked diligently to make this agreement happen."
The dates for the tournaments are May 20-23, 2015 and May 25-28, 2016.
"The Sugar Land Skeeters are thrilled that the Southland Conference has decided to return to Constellation Field in 2015 and 2016," Skeeters general manager Chris Jones said. "We look forward to continuing this new relationship with the conference and providing a state-of-the-art venue to showcase some of the best talent in collegiate baseball."
Prior to returning to Sugar Land, the Southland will play its 2014 Baseball Tournament on the campus of Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark., May 21-24. The 2015 and 2016 tournaments will mark the 29th and 30th year of the Southland Conference baseball tournament. Southland baseball began in 1964 but the league did not conduct a centralized postseason tournament from 1969 to 1992.
The event is set up with two double-elimination brackets with the winners meeting in a single game for the tournament championship. The winner of the Southland tournament is the league's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.
