Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The TinCaps received a remarkable start from 18-year-old Luis Patiño on Wednesday afternoon at Parkview Field in a 3-2 win against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers).
Patiño became the youngest starter in the Midwest League this year as he was just added to the team on Tuesday from Extended Spring Training for the Padres in Peoria, Ariz. The native of Barranquilla, Columbia, went five innings, allowing only one earned run, while striking out four batters. Including Patiño, the TinCaps have the six youngest players in the league who are all 18 years old.
West Michigan (20-18) grabbed the lead early. With two outs in the top of the first inning, Luke Burch doubled and reached third base on an error to give way to Reynaldo Rivera who singled to score Burch and give the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead.
Fort Wayne (16-22) didn't take long to answer. In the bottom of the second, third baseman Luis Almanzar walked to lead off the inning. Then, shortstop Gabriel Arias singled to advance Almanzar to third and an errant throw to first base brought Almanzar home to tie the game at 1-1.
The next inning was more of the same from the TinCaps. Second baseman Esteury Ruiz singled and stole second base, and first baseman Carlos Belen was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Almanzar singled to center field, scoring Ruiz and giving Fort Wayne the 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Arias doubled down the right-field line, scoring Belen and extending the TinCaps edge to 3-1.
The Whitecaps threatened by loading the bases in the top of the sixth inning. But relief pitcher Ben Sheckler came on to force Burch into a 4-6-3 double play. The groundout plated a run, but Fort Wayne got out of the jam with another groundout from West Michigan, keeping a 3-2 advantage.
Sheckler followed that inning with two scoreless frames, finishing with three innings pitched, allowing two hits and striking out two.
Relief pitcher Jared Carkuff collected his second save of the season to finish off the TinCaps 3-2 victory.
Defensively, the TinCaps, who set a franchise record on Friday at Kane County by turning six doubleplays in a game, turned four more in this win.
Fort Wayne picked up the win in front of the fourth sellout of the season. The 7,512 fans at Parkview Field marked the largest crowd of the season.
