Bees Use Big Sixth Inning to Take Down Cougars 9-3

Burlington, IA. - The Burlington Bees (16-19) offense took a 180-degree turn in their 9-3 victory over the Kane County Cougars (17-17). After getting shutout the previous night and only getting three hits, the Bees lit up the Cougars pitching with nine runs on nine hits. Ed Del Rosario (1-0) picked up his first victory of the season, after going three innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits, and striking out three. Matt Peacock (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on five hits and giving up two walks in two innings of relief. This was a shocking performance from Peacock, considering he had a .47 ERA in 19 innings of work with 17 strikeouts coming into tonight's game.

Both Teams strike early

The Cougars wanted to get on the board early in game two, after not scoring until the eighth inning in game one. The Cougars got their wish after getting a sac fly from Ernie De La Trinidad to score Gabriel Maciel and make the score 1-0. Later on, with runners at the corners, catcher Renae Martinez attempted to steal second, but a bad throw from Keinner Pina to second, allowed Jasrado Chisholm to score, and make it 2-0 Cougars after the first half inning. Bees starter Mitchell Traver would only pitch one more inning and finish the day with two runs given up on two hits, and two walks.

Already down 2-0, the Bees wanted to get a win for the young lady celebrating her birthday in the Bees party area, and Jo Adell gave her one of her many gifts in the first. Adell sent a ball well beyond 365 feet in right for a solo homerun, and to cut the Cougars lead to 2-1. Adell gave the fan another gift in the bottom of the third, when he hit his second homerun of the game to left, giving the Bees a 3-2 lead. After an early departure from Traver, the Bees went with Jorge Tavarez and he delivered big time. Tavarez pitched three innings, allowing just two hits, and striking out five hitters. Tavarez was done after the fifth, and the Bees went with Ed Del Rosario in the sixth.

Not done yet

After a two out double from Eudy Ramos, the Cougars had runners on second and third in the top of the sixth, and were looking for a big hit to get a run or two in. However, the Cougars didn't need that hit to score a run, as Del Rosario threw a wild pitch well above the head of Ramos, which allowed Martinez to score from third, and make the score 3-3. However, the thoughts of a close game till the end quickly went out the door in the bottom half of the sixth.

Anything you can do, we can do better

Looking to gain back the lead, the Bees offense exploded in the sixth to take away any momentum the Cougars had built the previous half inning. The Bees first six batters reached base in the sixth, starting with back to back singles from Brandon Marsh and Torii Hunter, and then a four pitch walk to David MacKinnon loaded the bases. Next batter Pina shot a line drive into shallow center, which easily scored Marsh and Hunter, making it 5-3 Bees. The Bees added two more runs on RBI singles from Franklin Torres and Julio Garcia, to take a 7-3 lead.

A little insurance never hurts

Leading 7-3 in the bottom of the eight, Burlington was well on their way to picking up their first home victory of the month. However, Jo Adell wanted to make sure the Cougars were put to rest before the final pitch was even thrown. After back-to-back walks to Harrison Wenson and Leonardo Rivas, Adell hit a line drive barely fair down the left field line, scoring both runners and giving Adell his fourth and fifth RBI of the game, making it 9-3 Bees. Max Herrmann threw a one-two-three ninth inning, to give the Bees their 16th win of the season.

Bullpen X factor in tonight's victory

When seeing the stats of tonight's game, a majority of people are going to be looking at Jo Adell. Obviously Adell had an amazing game and was no doubt the player of the game. However, this win would not have been possible without Tavarez, Del Rosario, and Herrmann. It's hard to be prepared for your starter to be done after just two innings, especially considering Traver has been one of the best pitchers for the Bees this season, but these three players stepped up and got the job done. The three pitchers went a combined seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits, and striking out nine batters, and when the bullpen needed support, the offense stepped up and delivered a big inning. Overall the Bees played a great team game tonight. Their offense, and bullpen stepped up after a rough game the night before and should have a lot of momentum following this win.

Queen Bee of the Game

Tonight's queen bee player of the game award goes to Jo Adell. Adell went 4-5 with two homeruns a double, and five RBI's. The Angel's number one overall prospect is now hitting .325, with three homeruns, and 25 RBI's.

Looking ahead

Both teams will now look to take a 2-1 series lead in the third game of the four-game series. Tomorrow's starter for the Bees will be Isaac Mattson. Mattson is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA on the season. The Cougars will be going with one of their top pitchers Jeff Bain. Bain is 2-1, with a 2.15 ERA, which is the lowest among starters for the Cougars. However, Mattson does lead the team with 17 walks, so the Bees will need to be patient at the plate to be successful in tomorrow's game. Tomorrow is also kids eat free day at Community Field. Every child ages 6-12 with an admissions ticket will receive a free hot dog and soda from the Bees concession stand.
