Panthers Sign Downing to Entry Level Contract

Portland, ME - Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon today announced the signing of defenseman Michael Downing to a three-year Entry Level Contract. In a related move, Portland Pirates General Manager Eric Joyce announced that Downing has signed an Amateur Tryout Contract with the Portland Pirates and will join the team for the remainder of the 2015-16 season.

Downing, a 6-foot-2, 200 pound defenseman from Canton, Michigan, played in 35 games in his junior season with the University of Michigan Wolverines this year, helping guide the Maize and Blue to a Big-10 conference title and NCAA Division I tournament berth. He scored three goals and 17 assists for 20 points and collected 66 penalty minutes.

The 20 year-old played in 105 games over his collegiate career at Michigan, notching 11 goals, 43 assists, and 54 points.

Selected by Florida in the Fourth Round (97th Overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Downing will be eligible to make his pro debut this Friday night when the Pirates host the Providence Bruins at Cross Insurance Arena.
