Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs won an outstanding pitchers' duel on Thursday, beating Wichita 1-0 at Haymarket Park. Lincoln improves to 19-13 on the second half of the season.
Saltdogs starter Jim Paduch (6-5) tossed a gem for Lincoln, allowing just six hits over his eight innings of work. Paduch did not walk a batter, and struck out 11 hitters, setting a team season high. The most serious threat by the Wingnuts came in the third inning, when Wichita put runners on first and third with nobody out. The Wingnuts appeared to take the lead on a sacrifice fly to center, but Lincoln appealed to third, and the umpires ruled the runner out for leaving the base early. Wichita loaded the bases after that with two out, but Josh Burrus ran down Greg Porter's fly ball to deep left-center, preserving the scoreless tie.
Lincoln, meanwhile, struggled to solve Wichita starter Will Savage (5-7), who ended up throwing a complete game despite taking the loss. The Saltdogs only left one runner on base all night, but Burrus started the bottom of the seventh inning with a double. Albenis Machado laid down a bunt that moved Burrus to third, and Phil Hawke hit a sacrifice fly to right to score the game's only run. Paduch then retired the Wingnuts in order in the eighth, and Chris Thompson pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 27th save.
The win allowed Lincoln to reclaim sole possession of first place in the North Division of the American Association. The Saltdogs had been tied with St. Paul, but the Saints lost 6-0 at Sioux Falls.
The Saltdogs head to St. Paul for a big series that begins Friday night at 7:05. Righty Jarrett Gardner will make the start for Lincoln.
The next Saltdogs homestand begins on August 18. For more team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
