St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD (August 13, 2009) - The St. Paul Saints ran into Pat Mahomes circa 2008 as the Sioux Falls Canaries starter hurled his first complete game shutout since May 24, 2008 and the Saints failed to complete the sweep losing 6-0 on Thursday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The Saints managed just one runner as far as second base which occurred in the second. Jacob Butler walked and with two outs moved to second on a single by Anthony Norman. Andrew Schmiesing grounded out to first to end the inning. The Saints never touched second base again as Mahomes went the distance allowing six hits while walking three and striking out three earning his second win of the season.

Saints starter Mark Moriarty, coming off his career high 10 strikeouts in his last outing, started off in fine fashion striking out two in the first inning. In the second, however, he walked Cory Harris with one out and then gave up a two-run homer to left from Trevor Lawhorn, his seventh of the season.

In the fourth the Canaries put it away as Beau Torbert led off with a single and moved to third on a bunt single by Harris and Saints second baseman Alex Fonseca's throwing error. With one out Patrick Reilly singled home Torbert to make it 3-0. J.D. Reininger's single loaded the bases, but Moriarty was able to get Joe Dempsey to bounce back to the mound and force the runner at the plate. Joe Anthonsen, however, drove in two with a single to center to make it 5-0.

The Canaries finished their scoring with a solo homer from Reininger in the sixth, his fourth of the season.

The Saints now trail the Lincoln Saltdogs by 1.0 game after they defeated the Wichita Wingnuts 1-0, but the Saints welcome in the Saltdogs for a three game series beginning Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Mitch Wylie (7-6, 4.42) to the mound against Saltdogs RHP Jarrett Gardner (9-4, 4.20). It is Back to School Lunchbox Giveaway presented by Xcel Energy with the first 2,500 fans receiving a lunch box. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
