Wichita Wingnuts News Release
LINCOLN, NE- The Wichita Wingnuts fell 1-0 to the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park on Thursday night.
Will Savage allowed one run on just five hits in eight innings, but a sacrifice fly from Phil Hawke in the bottom of the seventh proved to be the game's only run.
The Wingnuts appeared to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. With first and third and no outs, Patrick Brooks lifted a flyball to medium center field that was caught by Josh Burrus. Steve Pearson tagged from third base and headed home, beating Burrus's throw by a wide margin, in what looked to be a sacrifice fly. However, home plate umpire Ron Teague upheld Lincoln's appeal at third saying that Pearson had left the bag early. Video replay was inconclusive.
Savage allowed three or fewer earned runs for the 13th time in 17 starts this season but drops to 5-7. Lincoln starter Jim Paduch tossed eight shutout innings, striking out 11 to pick up the win.
The Wingnuts went down in order against Chris Thompson in the top of the ninth, who earned his 27th save of the year.
The Wingnuts begin the final leg of their 16-game road trip on Friday night when they travel to Fort Worth and begin a three-game series against the First Half South Division champion Cats. Right-handers Derek Blacksher and Nat Harris take the mound. All the action can be heard locally on 1410AM KGSO and worldwide at www.kgso.com after the completion of the evening game of the 75th annual NBC World Series. The Wingnuts return home on Tuesday, August 18th when they host the Sioux City Explorers at 7:05 p.m. Meanwhile, the NBC World Series continues at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium through August 15th.
