Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins beat the Hartford Wolf Pack Friday night 2-0 to salvage a split of their home-and-home series. The P-Bruins got goals from Colton Hargrove and Austin Czarnik while Zane McIntyre had his sixth shutout of the season in net.
Providence came out of the tunnel playing aggressively against Hartford with nine shots in just the first five minutes of the game. Brandon Halverson however was not able to block Hargrove from poking the puck through the five hole to open the scoring. Emil Johansson flew into the offensive zone and created the chance by putting a shot on goal that Hargrove converted for his 14th goal of the season. Colton Saucerman picked up his first career assist on the play and the P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead. With just 2:50 left in the period, Czarnik doubled the Providence lead with the 50th professional goal of his career. Ryan Fitzgerald passed Czarnik the puck from the half boards to the bottom of the left circle, and he rang one off the iron and into the net for his 14th goal of the season. The P-Bruins outshot the Wolf Pack 18-6 in the period, and brought a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
The second period remained scoreless, as both P-Bruins and Wolfpack played competitive defense. Each team had a pair of power plays in the period, but neither saw success. Providence suffered a scare earlier in the period, as one of their star rookies had to leave the game. Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson and Brendan Smith collided at the blue line and Forsbacka Karlsson hit his head on the ice. After staying down on his back for five minutes, he needed assistance getting to the locker room and did not return for the rest of the game.
As the defensive fight continued, neither the Providence Bruins or the Hartford Wolfpack were able to score in the last period. The P-Bruins had the better chances in the period where Austin Czarnik and Justin Hickman had breakways in the second half of the period, but were unable to beat Halverson. With just two minutes left in the game, Halverson was pulled as a last-ditch attempt to score, but the P-Bruins held on for the 2-0 win.
McIntyre stopped all 38 shots at net for his sixth shut-out of the season while Halverson was able to block 22 of 24. Providence was 0/5 on the power play and 3/4 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins are back in action Friday at the Dunk when they take on the Charlotte Checkers at 7:05pm.
