Providence Bruins News Release

Allentown, PA - The Providence Bruins defeated the Lehigh Valley Phantoms tonight by a final score of 9-1. Colby Cave, Sean Kuraly, Peter Cehlarik (2), Chris Porter, Jake DeBrusk, Ben Marshall, Jordan Szwarz and Wayne Simpson scored for Providence. Goaltender Malcolm Subban stopped 28 shots in the victory.

Lehigh Valley started the game with several scoring opportunities, leading in shots early in the first thanks to power play opportunities. The first came just 46 seconds into the game when Providence was whistled for too many men on the ice, served by Peter Mueller. The opportunity proved unsuccessful as Bruins Goaltender Malcolm Subban kept the Phantoms out of the net. At 2:59 the P-Bruins scored the first of the game when Colby Cave powered a shot top-corner for his ninth of the season. The goal was assisted by Jake DeBrusk and Chris Casto to make it 1-0 Providence. After trading power play opportunities with the Phantoms, Providence added to their lead at 16:40 when Sean Kuraly one-timed a no-look pass from Danton Heinen for a 2-0 advantage. The goal was his eighth of the season, also assisted by Tyler Randell. Malcolm Subban turned back several Phantoms scoring opportunities to close out the period with a 2-0 Providence lead.

The second period would see the Bruins score five total goals, including two by forward Peter Cehlarik. His first came at 2:05 in the period, assisted by Wayne Simpson and Jordan Szwarz for his 16th of the season. Roughly five minutes later he would tally his 17th of the year, assisted by Simpson and Szwarz again to give the P-Bruins a 4-0 lead. The offensive onslaught continued at 8:15 in the period when Chris Porter registered his first of the season on an assist by Chris Casto to increase the lead to 5-0. Jake DeBrusk joined in on the fun at 15:57 when he tallied his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Mueller and Grant, increasing the lead to 6-0. The scoring was capped at 17:59 when Ben Marshall powered a shot into the back of the net from just inside the blueline for a 7-0 lead. The goal was his second of the season, assited by Noel Acciari and Alex Grant.

Providence continued to apply pressure to begin the third period, looking to add to their overwhelming lead. Jordan Szwarz did just that at 4:09 in the period, beating Phantoms goaltender Mark Dekanich for his 10th of the season, assisted by Danton Heinen and Chris Casto. Only a few minutes later Wayne Simpson would net the final goal of the game for Providence, one-timing a pass from Peter Cehlarik for his 12th of the season. The score at 7:30 in the period, also assisted by Jordan Szwarz, gave the P-Bruins a commanding 9-0 lead. After killing off a penalty at 12:33, Lehigh Valley picked up the pressure in an attempt to get on the scoreboard. The Phantoms finally solved P-Bruins goaltender Malcolm Subban with just over a minute to play when Phantoms forward Colin McDonald scored his 15th of the season. Providence would hold on in the final seconds however, sealing the victory on the road by a final score of 9-1.
