January 21, 2017 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, were defeated by the Grand Rapids Griffins at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI on Saturday by a final score of 5-0. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 18-16-1-3 overall this season and with a .526 points percentage, remain alone in fourth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The Griffins posted the first period's lone goal on Saturday as Martin Frk lit the lamp at 9:33 at even strength. In the middle frame, Grand Rapids rattled off three unanswered tallies, from Eric Tangradi on the power-play at 3:34, Evgeny Svechnikov at even-strength at 10:57, and Matthew Ford with the extra skater at 14:07, to take a 4-0 edge into the third period of play. Much like in Saturday's opening stanza, the game's final frame featured only one marker, an even-strength Dylan Sadowy goal at 18:37 that delivered the Griffins a 5-0 victory.
Cleveland backstop Anton Forsberg fell to 12-8-2 in net for the Monsters this season despite stopping 26 of the 31 pucks he faced while Cal Heeter improved to 7-1-0 between the pipes for Grand Rapids by virtue of a 35-save shutout performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Tuesday road clash vs. the Milwaukee Admirals with full coverage, live from UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena in Milwaukee, WI, underway at 8:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
