
P-Bruins Defeat Penguins 4-3 in Shootout

Wilkes-Barre, PA - The Providence Bruins defeated the Wilkes- B arre/ Scranton Penguins 4-3 in a shootout Saturday evening. Craig Cunningham, Alexander Khokhlachev and Justin Florek scored in regulation, while Cunningham, Khokhlachev and Ryan Spooner tallied in the shootout. Niklas Svedberg made 17 saves in the victory .
In the first period, the Penguins took a 1-0 lead at the 17:21 mark when Jayson Megna went down the right wing and scored on a wrap-around goal beating Svedberg just past his left pad. It was his ninth goal of the season and the goal was unassisted. Wilkes-Barre led 1-0 going into the first intermission.
In the second period, the P-Bruins tied the game at the 3:41 mark when Cunningham scored his 20th goal of the season, beat ing Penguins net minder Jeff Deslauriers back door. Spooner fed Matt Lindblad down low, who the n passed the puck to Cunningham, who one-timed it into the back of the net. The Penguins retook the lead when Nick Drazenovic sent the puck in deep . I t took a lucky bounce off the boards with Spencer Machacek scoring a wide open goal at the 11:07 mark, his 12th of the season . The P-Bruins tied the game for the second time in the period when Mike Moore sent a bouncing puck to Khokhlachev, who one-timed it into the net for h is 14th goal of the season. The goal came at the 18:43 mark and Bobby Robins picked up the second assist. The game went into the second intermission tied at two.
In the third period, the Penguins re took the lead once aga in, when Machacek scored his second of the game and 13th of the season. He one-timed the puck past Svedberg only 33 seconds into the 3rd period. Andrew Ebbett and Dominik Uher had the assists. The P-Bruins battled back to tie the game at three when Florek wrist ed a shot off the post and into the net for his 13th goal of the season. Khokhlachev fed Florek in the slot, with David Warsofsky getting the second assist . The game went into overtime tied at three.
After a scoreless overtime the game went into a shootout. In the shootout, Cunningham scored on the backhand in round one to give the P-Bruins the advantage. Ebbett tied it up in round two, before Khokhlachev gave the P-Bruins the lead back. Drazenovic tied the shootout in the third round, before Spooner went onto score the game winning goal in round four as the P-Bruins went onto the 4-3 shootout victory.
Svedberg stopped 17 of 20 shots in regulation and three shots in the shootout for the P-Bruins, while Deslauriers made 20 saves in regulation and one save in the shootout for the Penguins. The P-Bruins were 1-for-2 on the power play and 2-for- 2 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins are in Bridgeport to face the Sound Tigers o n Sunday at 3:00pm, before return ing home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Friday at 7:05pm for a match-up against Bridgeport.
