MONSTERS GAME RECAP: Monsters Top Iowa 3-2 Before Crowd of 15,258

Colin Smith collected two points, including the eventual game-winning goal in the second period, to help the Lake Erie Monsters (22-24-0-5) to a 3-2 win over the Iowa Wild (22-20-6-4) Saturday night before a Quicken Loans Arena crowd of 15,258. Matt Hunwick also had a pair of assists for the Monsters, while Andrew Agozzino and Michael Schumacher chipped in with a goal each. Calvin Pickard stopped 29 shots in the victory. The Monsters have points in three straight games, and host the Texas Stars in their next game at 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday.

Agozzino redirected a Hunwick point shot for his 12th goal of the season at 2:10 of the opening period to give the Monsters a 1-0 lead; J.T. Wyman also assisted on the goal. Schumacher stretched the Monsters lead to 2-0 at 10:54 of the first period on the power play with his second goal of the season when he scored on a perfect setup from Smith in the slot. Mark Olver also assisted Schumacher's goal.

Kris Foucault pulled Iowa to within a goal when he scored at 9:06 of the second period, making the score 2-1, but Smith regained a two-goal lead for the Monsters with a wrist shot from the high slot at 16:23 of the middle fame. Smith's sixth goal of the season gave the Monsters a 3-1 lead, with assists to Hunwick and Elliott.

Iowa scored a third period goal when Brian Connelly netted a point shot, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Monsters, who held on to win 3-2.

Pickard stopped 29 of 31 shots and is now 12-13-3 in net for the Monsters this season. Johan Gustafsson is 8-12-2 after the loss; he stopped 29 of 31 Monsters shots.

The Monsters host Texas at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at Quicken Loans Arena.

NOTES: Agozzino has goals in back-to-back games, and now has a four-game point streak... The Monsters are 6-8-0-1 against the Midwest Division, 1-2-0-1 against Iowa this season, and 3-4-0-1 in the month of February... The Monsters were 1-3 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill... Seven different Monsters had points in the victory.
