Hutchinson, IceCaps Hold Sharks at Bay
February 22, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
Michael Hutchinson stopped a club record 49 shots as the St. John's IceCaps defeated the Worcester Sharks 3-1 Saturday at the DCU Center to complete the two-game sweep.
Hutchinson made 22 saves in the first period and John Albert scored his league leading fifth shorthanded goal to help the IceCaps win their third straight game. Kyle MacKinnon notched a goal and two assists while Patrice Cormier's second period tally stood as the game-winner.
Albert kicked off the scoring late in the first with his fourth shorthanded marker in the last seven games. MacKinnon fed Albert in stride, who raced around the Sharks defence and went under the bar to beat goaltender Harri Sateri. Despite being outshot 22-6, St. John's held a 1-0 advantage after 20 minutes.
The Sharks drew even just 21 seconds into the second period, however, after some miscommunication behind the IceCaps net. Freddie Hamilton was the recipient of a pass from below the goal line and one-timed a shot past Hutchinson to tie the game at one apiece.
The IceCaps retook the lead midway through the frame on Cormier's fifth of the season. Busting down the left side, Cormier sent a hard pass in front that Blair Riley appeared to get a stick on but Cormier was given credit, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead.
Just over five minutes into the final frame, St. John's got an insurance marker to go up 3-1. Will O'Neill found Riley just inside the blueline and the winger's shot was poked in by MacKinnon, who was on the doorstep uncontested.
Hutchinson shut the door the rest of the way to record his 10th win of the season.
The IceCaps finish off their six-game road trip Sunday in Lewiston versus the Portland Pirates (5:30 PM NT) before returning home to open up a seven-game home stand next weekend against the Binghamton Senators.
