Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, member of the American Hockey League, announced that the Boston Bruins have assigned five men to Providence, including defensemen Matt Lashoff and Wade Brookbank, forwards Jeff Hoggan and Yan Stastny, and goaltender Mike Brown, while recalling netminder Brian Finley. The P-Bruins now have 26 players on their roster, including 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders.
Lashoff, 20, was originally recalled to Boston from Providence on October 25 and played in his first seven NHL games during his call-up, recording one assist. The rookie began the season with the P-Bruins, playing five games while earning one goal and an assist. The blue-liner signed with Providence in 2005-06 after a full junior season with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Selected 22nd overall (first round) by Boston in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, the East Greenbush, New York, native played the final seven regular season games for Providence before adding another six games of experience in the post-season. All told, Lashoff had one goal and one assist. In three junior seasons with Kitchener, the defenseman scored 93 points (16g, 75a) in 162 contests. Lashoff was also an OHL all-star in 2006.
Brookbank, 29, joins Providence after playing seven games in Boston and recording a goal on the only shot he has taken all season. The defenseman, who played forward with Boston, spent all of 2005-06 in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks, despite playing in just 32 games. In his 10th pro season, Brookbank has suited up for 11 different teams, Boston, Vancouver and the Nashville Predators of the NHL. The undrafted blue-liner is best known for his ability to mix it up on the ice, totaling 2,054 penalty minutes in 437 career games, along with 54 points (9g, 45a). In 68 NHL games, the Lanigan, Saskatchewan, native has six points (4g, 2a) and 229 PIM.
Hoggan, 28, is in his sixth professional season, which began by playing 13 games in Boston, tallying one assist. Last season, Hoggan played 52 NHL games with the St. Louis Blues, amassing eight points (2g, 6a). In 254 career games, 189 in the AHL with the Houston Aeros and Worcester IceCats, the undrafted left wing has 90 points (45g, 35a). In his first full season, the Hope, British Columbia, native won a Calder Cup championship with the Aeros. The following year, 2003-04, Hoggan set career-bests with 21 goals, 15 assists and 36 points.
Stastny, 24, returns to Providence, where he played in six post-season contests in 2005-06, registering five assists. The center is in his second season with the Boston organization after being acquired along with Marty Reasoner and a 2006 second round draft pick (Milan Lucic) for Sergei Samsonov on March 9, 2006. The Quebec City, Quebec, native played in 11 games for Boston this year, tallying one assist. Boston originally drafted Stastny in the eighth round, 259th overall, of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
Brown, 21, is in his second professional season following a stint in Providence last year and much of 2005-06 spent in the ECHL with the Dayton Bombers and South Carolina Stingrays. The goalie began this year in the ECHL with the Long Beach IceDogs, going 1-4-0-2 with a 3.15 goals-against-average. With the P-Bruins last season, the netminder from Baldwinsville, New York, saw action in a pair of games, playing 42 minutes while blocking 11 of 13 shots for a 2.87 goals-against-average and not receiving a decision. Brown was selected by Boston 153rd overall (fifth round) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
Finley, 25, has won his last four AHL decisions and is 6-3-0 overall this year with a 3.06 GAA in his first season between the pipes for Providence. Called up to Boston for the second time this season, the netminder is 0-1 with a 3.08 GAA and .923 save percentage in 39 minutes of NHL action against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Previously, Finley spent four years with the Milwaukee Admirals, compiling an 84-55-12 record with a 2.47 GAA and franchise-high 15 shutouts in 161 AHL games. The fifth year pro also spent a pair of games in the NHL with Nashville (0-1-0, 5.61 GAA) and seven for the Toledo Storm (4-2-0, 2.36 GAA) of the ECHL. Last season, Finley was named the Koho/AHL Goaltender of the Month for November after going 5-0 with a 1.16 GAA and three shutouts. In 2004-05, the netminder had a career-best 36 wins. The native of Sault. Ste. Marie, Ontario, was drafted sixth overall by Nashville in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, holding the distinction as one of only eight goalies to be selected sixth or higher.
