Owlz Can't Fend off Raptors in Opener

(Ogden) - The Orem Owlz couldn't hang on in the series opener in Ogden, losing 7-5 on Thursday night at Lindquist Field.

Ogden opened the scoring in the second inning. Jon Litell opened the inning with a single to center. With one out, Kenneth Betancourt ripped a single to right, scoring Litell, giving the Raptors a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Jeremy Arocho drove in Betancourt with a single, extending the lead to 2-0.

After Erven Roper pulled the Owlz to within a run with a solo home run in the third inning, the Raptors got their two runs lead back with a Matt Cogen RBI double.

The Owlz scored two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Connor Fitzsimons singled with one out and moved to second on an error that allowed Mario Sanjur to reach. With two outs, Cam Williams singled to score Ftizsimons and Sanjur later scored on an error tying the game at three.

Tanner Chock worked 3.2 innings in relief, allowing just one run and striking out a season-high seven batters in the process.

Another Ogden error led to another Owlz run, giving the Owlz a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning.

The Raptors batted eight times in the sixth inning, scoring four runs to take a 7-4 lead. The Owlz tried to rally, scoring a run in the eighth inning a Mario Sanjur groundout but would not close the gap any further, losing their sixth game in a row by the score of 7-5.

Ogden reliever Gregorio Sequera (1-2) picked up the win with two scoreless innings while Jacob Voss (1-1) was charged with the loss and Hunter Speer (3) earned the save. The Owlz and Raptors continue their series tomorrow night at 7:00 as Cole Duensing makes the start against Caleb Sampen for the Raptors at Lindquist Field.
