Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release
Alexander Martinez has tied the Grand Junction Rockies record for most save in a single after he closed a 3-1 win over the Idaho Fall Chukars Friday night at Melaleuca Field.
Martinez worked around a 1-out single and struck out Angel Medina for his 13th save, matching Scott Oberg's mark set in 2012.
The win improves the Rockies to 7-3 in the second half, 27-21 overall, and with the two wins to start the 4-game series in Idaho Falls, they now have a 1.5 game lead over the Chukars for the second best record in the Pioneer League's South Division.
The Rockies closed out a game that saw the Chukars finish with just four hits and they didn't hit the ball out of the infield until the eighth inning.
Ryan Feltner made his fifth start and faced the minimum in four innings, allowing just a Tyler James infield single to start the fourth, but induced a groundball double play right after from Offerman Collado. He struck out a season-high seven batter, and the Rockies finally broke through and pushed across the game's first runs in the fifth.
Daniel Montano doubled on the first pitch of the inning, and he moved to third when Reese Berberet reached on an error. Zach Hall's sacrifice fly scored Montano, but Berberet was thrown out at the plate when Navarro doubled for the second out of the inning, though Will Golsan reached on an error to bring home Navarro and make it 2-0.
After Will Tribucher retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning, Javier Guevara doubled home Grant Lavigne to make it 3-0. Following a second 1-2-3 inning from Tribucher, the Chukars scored a run off Rayne Supple in the seventh, and they had the bases loaded with one out, but he struck out Chase Vallot and finished the inning by getting Medina to ground out to first.
Jake Bird stranded two runners in the eighth, setting things up for Martinez in the ninth.
Rockies pitching struck out a season-high 15 batters, a night after punching out 14.
Montano and Coco Montes finished with two hits.
The Rockies will look to seal a series win when they send Ryan Rolison to the mound in game three against the Chukars. He'll be opposed by Pioneer League All Star J.C. Cloney, who has won all eight of his starts in 2018.
