
Voyagers Comeback Bid Falls Short in Missoula

Missoula, MT - The Voyagers smacked three solo home runs before their comeback effort fell short in a 7-6 series-opening loss to the Osprey Friday night at Ogren Park.
Great Falls (23-24, 1-8) has lost five straight games for the first time all season. The Voyagers are now 5-6 against the Osprey in the season series. They fell to 7-15 on the road. Missoula (23-24, 4-5) has won two straight and is a division-best 14-8 at home.
The Osprey plated all the runs they would need in the first three frames. Missoula opened the game with a two-run 1st. Alek Thomas and Blaze Alexander both singled to begin the home half. Zac Almond brought in the first run with an RBI double lined into left. The second run later scored on a wild pitch.
The Voyagers trimmed the lead to one in the 2nd with a leadoff solo home run deep to right-center off the bat of Adam McGinnis. It was McGinnis' sixth homer of the season. Missoula made it 4-1 with two more in the bottom of the 2nd. Daniel Wasinger walked with one out. David Sanchez followed with a double off the wall in left-center. Alek Thomas drove in a run with a fielder's choice as no out was recorded on a play at home. Blaze Alexander drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to deep left.
Both teams scored again in the 3rd. Lenyn Sosa reached for Great Falls with a ground ball error at third. Sosa scored on an RBI double lined into center by Logan Sowers and it was 4-2. Eight batters came to the plate for the Osprey in a three-run bottom of the 3rd. Zac Almond led off the inning with a double. With one out, Brandon Leyton made it 5-2 with an RBI double lined into left. Leyton stole third and scored on a Jesus Marriaga groundout. After Daniel Wasinger walked and David Sanchez singled on the infield, Alek Thomas lined an RBI single to center for a 7-2 cushion.
A two-run 4th for Great Falls closed the gap to 7-4. Alex Destino clubbed a leadoff solo home run deep to left-center for his fifth of the season. Romy Gonzalez reached with a one-out double in the alley to right-center. Gonzalez scored on a Lenyn Sosa RBI single in the hole to left. That base hit pushed Sosa's hitting streak to a team-best 13 games.
The Voyagers made it 7-5 with a two-out rally in the 6th. Lenyn Sosa doubled to the gap in left-center. Logan Sowers reached on a groundball error at third. Amado Nunez then brought Sosa home with a base hit to left. The final run of the game came in the top of the 8th on a solo home run lined deep to right by Sowers. It was Sowers' seventh dinger of the season. Great Falls put the tying run on base in the 9th before the game ended.
Four Voyagers produced multi-hit games. Lenyn Sosa collected two hits with one RBI and two runs scored. Logan Sowers went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. Amado Nunez and Romy Gonzalez also had two hits. Zac Almond led the Osprey attack with three doubles. Alek Thomas had two hits with two RBIs.
Trent Autry picked up his first win of the season on the mound. Autry (1-1) pitched one-and-two-thirds in relief and gave up one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Konnor Pilkington took the loss. Pilkington (0-1) worked two and allowed four earned runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk. Bryan Menendez posted his fifth save of the season with one strikeout and one walk in the 9th.
Great Falls continues its three-game weekend series at Missoula with game two Saturday night at Ogren Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. The Voyagers return to Centene Stadium after the all-star break for a seven-game home stand starting August 9th.
