Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Pawtucket Red Sox (45-58) defeated the Charlotte Knights (54-50), 5-3, on Friday night in uptown Charlotte as Chris Owings continued a torrid stretch by homering in a sixth straight game to lift Pawtucket to its fifth consecutive win.

The PawSox, who entered the ballgame winners of four in a row and fresh off a three-game sweep of Durham, held a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning, when Owings mashed a three-run shot to continue to assert himself after joining the Red Sox organization last month.

Luis Robert started the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd inning, as he tripled into the gap and scored on an error to hand Charlotte a 1-0 lead.

Pawtucket fired back in the top of the 5th. Gorkys Hernandez singled in Bryce Brentz, who had reached on a single.

The PawSox added another in the top of the 6th. Marco Hernandez started the inning by smacking a base hit into center. Owings doubled one batter later to score Hernandez and narrowly missed a home run.

Three more scored for Pawtucket in the top of the 8th inning. Gorkys Hernandez and Marco Hernandez hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. The following batter, Owings, destroyed a three-run blast off the video board in left field. On Thursday, Owings had become the first Pawtucket player in 20 years to homer in five straight games, only to extend his ridiculous run Friday.

Charlotte tried to crawl back in the bottom half of the 8th. Zack Collins singled to start off the inning and made it to third with a double from Alcides Escobar. Collins scored on a wild pitch, moving Alcides Escobar to third.

The Knights added one more in the bottom of the 9th, as Daniel Palka hit his 18th home run of the season.

Ryan Weber started for the PawSox, pitching 4 solid innings while allowing one unearned run. Brian Johnson made his second rehab appearance for the PawSox, pitching 3 great innings, allowing only 1 hit and striking out 6.

The PawSox continue their 10-game road trip tomorrow night with the middle meeting of their three-game series against Charlotte, beginning at 7:04 p.m.

Pawtucket right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (3-6, 4.48) is slated to oppose Charlotte righty Donny Roach (2-6, 8.23).

Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 6:34 p.m.

After stops in Lehigh Valley and Syracuse, the PawSox return home for a brief, three-game homestand starting Friday, August 2nd. The first 3,000 fans in attendance that night will receive a Jackie Bradley, Jr. replica jersey. Saturday, August 3rd, is the final Free Youth Clinic, which will take place from 2:00 - 3:15 p.m. Super Heroes/Avengers-themed fireworks will follow. Sunday, August 4th is the PawSox's 22nd Annual FanFest, Ladies Day, and another Family Funday, which will include pre-game catch on the field and post-game run the bases.

Good tickets are available, and fans can visit the McCoy Stadium box office, which is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., and during all home games. Fans can also call (401) 724-7300 or log on to PawSox.com for tickets.
