LAST NIGHT: Kevin Kramer homered in the fifth and Trayvon Robinson smoked a pinch-hit RBI double in the eighth inning, but the Indians fell short in their comeback attempt at a series sweep in Syracuse on Thursday night, 3-2. On Robinson's double to right that scored Ke'Bryan Hayes from second, Will Craig was cut down at the plate on a 9-4-2 relay that kept Syracuse in front by one. Then in the ninth, Steven Baron reached on an infield single but pinch runner Darnell Sweeney was thrown out at second base trying to advance on a pitch in the dirt. Another out was recorded before Cole Tucker drew a four-pitch walk to again put the tying run on base. Erik Gonzalez swung at the first pitch he saw from Tim Peterson (S, 7) and hit a shallow fly ball to center field, where Aaron Altherr made a game-ending diving catch to seal Indy's fate. Sean Keselica (L, 1-5) gave up three runs in 3.2 innings of relief to suffer the loss. Ervin Santana (W, 2-1) yielded one run on five hits in six innings.

JB SHUCK, THE PITCHER: OF/LHP JB Shuck made his 10th career pitching appearance and first start in professional baseball last night in Syracuse. He tossed a 1-2-3 first inning and ended the frame with a swinging strikeout of Ruben Tejada. In the second, he allowed a single to Rene Rivera and followed that knock with a pair of walks to load the bases with no outs. Shuck, 32, responded to the big moment by striking out Aaron Altherr, Arismendy Alcantara and Ervin Santana -- all swinging -- to escape the jam. Shuck has held IL opponents scoreless in six of his seven appearances this year (7.2ip), the lone blemish being a seven-run outing on 7/15 vs. Syracuse (0.1ip). Shuck was a two-way player at Ohio State.

JB SHUCK, THE HITTER: Shuck doubled in his only at-bat last night to elevate his average to .281 (34-for-121) with three homers, two triples, nine doubles and 14 RBI in 45 games. The two-bagger was just his fourth hit in 25 at-bats this month (.160 average); he hit .371 in May and .279 in June for Indy.

JAKE THE GREAT: Jake Elmore went 1-for-3 with a single in last night's defeat, extending his hitting streak to 12 games and on-base streak to 14. During the 12-game stretch, the 32-year-old has hit .432 (19-for-44) with a .510 OBP. The 12-game streak is the second longest active streak in the IL behind Norfolk's Mason Williams (13) and the second longest by a Tribe player this season (Will Craig - 14, May 25-June 8).

KRAMER KRUSH: Kevin Kramer launched his sixth home run of the season in the fifth off Ervin Santana last night, his 21st career home run in a Tribe uniform. Kramer led the Indians with 15 homers in 2018. The long ball last night was Kramer's first since May 25 at Columbus; he had 199 plate appearances between home runs No. 5 and 6.

RED-HOT HAYES: 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes has hit safely in six straight, 11 of 12 games out of the All-Star break and 15 of his last 17 games overall, batting .310 (22-for-71) with three homers, four doubles, six RBI and 14 runs scored during the 17-game stretch. Over his last 12 contests dating back to July 11, the 22-year-old is hitting .315 (17-for-54).

THOSE ARE ZEROS: RHP Geoff Hartlieb tossed a scoreless bottom of the eighth last night to extend his scoreless streak to six games (10.1ip). The stretch is the third longest of his career, trailing a 12.0-inning stretch from May 15-June 9, 2017 with Single-A West Virginia and a 10.2-inning stretch from July 28-Aug. 20, 2016 with Rookie-Advanced Bristol. He is five outs shy of matching the longest scoreless stretch by a Tribe hurler this year.

BETTER ON THE ROAD: LHP Jake Brentz and LHP Cam Vieaux have fared much better on the road than pitching at Victory Field. Brentz has a 2.40 ERA (4er/15.0ip) and 20 K's with only seven walks in 11 road outings; at home he owns a 10.66 ERA (15er/12.2ip) with 15 K's and 15 walks in 11 appearances. Vieaux's home/road splits aren't as drastic as his fellow southpaw Brentz, but they are noticeable through 10 Triple-A starts. On the road in four starts, Vieaux is 2-0 with a 3.48 ERA (8er/20.2ip) and .189 average against (18-for-89). In six home starts, he is 1-1 with a 6.51 ERA (20er/27.2ip) and .286 average against (32-for-112).

SAYONARA SYRACUSE: The Indians and Mets concluded their season series with one another yesterday, and Syracuse came out on top in the seven games, 4-3. Indy dropped the first three games (outscored by SYR 40-8) before rallying to win three of the last four matchups (outscored SYR 19-10). In 26 seasons of playing one another in the regular season dating back to 1988, the Indians have now lost the season series to Syracuse just six times (1989, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2013, 2019). Indy is 14-6-6 in season sets vs. Syracuse since 1988.

PROSPECT CENTRAL: Baseball America released their midseason top 30 prospect lists for all 30 MLB teams earlier this month. Indy's active roster has seven of Pittsburgh's top 30 farmhands, including: 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes (1), RHP Mitch Keller (2), SS Cole Tucker (4), 2B Kevin Kramer (8), RHP Luis Escobar (10), 1B Will Craig (11) and OF Jason Martin (20). Rochester has just two of Minnesota's top 30 prospects on its active roster: SS Nicky Gordon (19) and RHP Randy Dobnak (30).
