Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Mets' bats came alive on Friday night in an 8-4 victory over the Toledo Mud Hens in the series opener at NBT Bank Stadium. Aaron Altheer collected four RBIs and three hits, including a home run in the win.
Syracuse (52-52) jumped out to a quick lead thanks to a three-run bottom of the second inning. Aaron Altherr led off with a single, and René Rivera followed with a double, placing runners at second and third base. Grégor Blanco then hit a sacrifice fly to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Arismendy Alcantara hit a two-run home run to push the Syracuse advantage to 3-0.
The Mets followed with a big third inning as well. Altherr, who hit his third home run with the Mets on Thursday, took flight again on Friday. Rubén Tejada and Dilson Herrera hit back-to-back singles to put two runners on. From there, Altherr hit a three-run home run to right-center field that gave Syracuse a 6-0 edge.
Toledo (46-58) started a comeback in the top of the sixth. Jake Rogers tripled to start the frame, and Jacob Robson reached on an infield single, placing runners at first and third. Victor Reyes followed with a single to score Rogers and get the Mud Hens on the board to make it a 6-1 ballgame. Dawel Lugo then hit a ground ball to short, and Robson scored on the play to trim the Syracuse lead to four, 6-2.
In the seventh, Dustin Peterson led off with a solo home run, to cut the deficit to three, 6-3. Then after a strikeout, the Mud Hens loaded the bases on two walks and a single. Mets reliever Ryan O'Rourke then walked Victor Reyes to force in a run for a 6-4 score.
The Mets got a run back in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Dilson Herrera tripled. Altherr continued his big day with an RBI double to push the lead back to three at 7-4.
Syracuse kept the pedal down in the eighth. Travis Taijeron blasted his team-leading 23rd home run of the season, increasing the advantage to 8-4.
Mets reliever Tim Peterson came on to pitch a scoreless ninth to secure the victory for the Mets.
Syracuse hosts Toledo again on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
