Evansville Otters News Release
Washington, PA- On Friday night it was the Evansville Otters (48-42) with the big inning. Last night it was the Washington Wild Things (39-51) with the big frame. In today's game it was both teams scoring big in a single inning, but the Otters were able to squeak by the Wild Things thanks to a Chris Sweeney RBI single in the eighth, eventually winning 6-5.
The Otters scored in the first inning on Friday night plating seven, scored one last night in the first inning and scored four today to take an early 4-0 advantage. Rolando Gomez led off the game with a walk before John Schultz flew out and Chris Sweeney struck out. Dane Phillips followed with a walk before Nik Balog singled between first and second to plate the first run o the game for the Otters and Josh Allen complimented that with a single up the middle, pushing the Otters ahead 2-0. Kurt Wertz Jr. strolled to the plate next, and with about 12 members of his family in attendance, lined a double to the right-centerfield gap for an Otters 4-0.
Tyler Vail started the game for the Otters and had an uneventful first two innings before running into trouble in the third inning. The Wild Things got a run before loading the bases for Austin Wobrock who doubled into the left-centerfield gap, clearing the bases and tying the game 4-4.
The tie would not last long though as after Vail got out of the fourth inning, Allen was first to the plate in the fourth and blasted a solo shot to the opposite field, putting the Otters back up on top, this time by a 5-4 score. Vail settled down to retire the final ten batters he faced, keeping the Otters ahead until the seventh inning when he handed the ball to Connor Little. Little punched out the first batter he faced and retired the next two to send the game to the top of the eighth.
John Schultz, who came into the game tied for the single-season hits record at 108 on the season, rocketed a ball down the third base line for a double and his 109th hit of the season, breaking the single season record. He and the Otters were immediately rewarded when Sweeney singled up the middle to put the Otters up by a pair at 6-4. The Otters loaded the bases later in the inning with nobody out, but could not get the runs home. It almost proved pivotal in the ninth because Edgar Lopez come on and allowed a run before ending the game with a fielder's choice groundout for the Otters 6-5 win.
Tyler Vail went six innings of work, allowing four runs, all earned, striking out three while walking two to improve his record to 9-4. Connor Little pitched the sixth and seventh innings, and combined with the final ten retired by Vail, the Otters retired 13 in a row from the end of the third to the beginning of the eighth inning. Edgar Lopez extended his league lead in saves with his 25th of the season, and has still blown just one save.
The Otters are off on Monday before returning to action on Tuesday night against the West Division leading Normal Cornbelters. The game is scheduled for 6:35 pm CDT and the pregame show featuring Jake Donnelly will begin at 6:15 pm CDT.
