
Crushers use six run fifth inning, coast to 10-3 victory

O'Fallon, Mo.- The Lake Erie Crushers defeat the River City Rascals, 10-3 as the Crushers score six runs in the fifth and three more runs in the eighth, record 16 hits and cruise to victory.
With the win, the Crushers (37-52) reached double digit runs for the first time since August 12. With the loss, the Rascals (51-39) finish the season series with the Crushers at 6-3.
With one out in the fifth, Brendan Costantino and Cody Stevens hit back-to-back singles. Chandler Brock hit a fielder's choice to second and Stevens was forced out. Mark Fowler hit a single to right to plate Costantino and give the Crushers a 1-0 lead. Jose Barraza walked to load the bases, and Juan Sanchez came up with a double over the head of the right fielder Josh Silver to score two more runs. The very next hitter, Boo Vazquez then hit a three run home run over the right field fence, his fifth of the year, to cap the six run inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Rascals would respond. Curran Redal led the inning off with a single and was followed by Jackson Slaid who hit his eighth home run into the left field bleachers. With one out, Zach Kometani doubled to left. Hector Crespo grounded to out to third but with two outs, Josh Ludy hit an RBI single to right field. The Rascals had cut the lead in half, 6-3.
The Crushers would add a run in the seventh inning. Jose Barraza singled into left field. With two outs, Boo Vazquez singled to move Barraza to third. Trevor Stevens singled to center, scoring Barraza.
The Crushers would add three more runs in the eighth inning. Costantino led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. Brock hit a one out double off the right field wall. Mark Fowler grounded out to third for the second out. Barraza came up next and walked and two batters later, Vazquez hit a two run double to right as the Crushers went up 10-3.
Crushers starting pitcher, Zach Morton (5-4), picked up the win as he went five innings allowing three runs on nine hits and struck out five. Mike Devine and Trevor Longfellow pitched two scoreless innings a piece out of the Crushers bullpen.
Dane Stone (8-5) was saddled with the loss after going five innings for the Rascals, allowing six runs, seven hits while striking out two. Rob Frank was the only pitcher out of the River City bullpen who didn't allow a run. Will Schierholz allowed a run in an inning, followed by Zac Treece who gave up two runs in 2/3 of an inning. Stephen Frey allowed a run in 1 1/3 innings.
The Crushers will have Monday off but will start the final homestand of the season on Tuesday against the Joliet Slammers at All Pro Freight Stadium. The Crushers will send lefty Brad Zambron (3-6, 4.17) to the mound. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
