Boomers Edge Grizzlies to Salvage Final Game of Series

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Grizzlies dropped their final road contest of the season at Boomers Stadium on Sunday afternoon, falling 4-2 in their final game of a three-game series against the Schaumburg Boomers.
RHP Trevor Richards (5-6) made the start for Gateway and began the game with a scoreless frame. In the second inning, the Boomers took the lead on Cam Sherer's two-run single.
The Grizzlies (39-50) struck right back in the third. Seth Heck singled with two outs and Ben Waldrip laced a double into right-center to plate Heck. Waldrip picked up his team-leading 59th RBI of the season.
Gateway would pull even in the fourth. Garrett Vail stepped to the plate with runners at the corners and one out against Boomers' starter Brett Mabry (7-3). Vail hit a weak ground ball to short stop that resulted in an infield single. The hit scored a run and tied the game at 2-2.
The Boomers (37-53) took the lead right back in the fifth. John Menken smacked an RBI single to score Ryan Brockett, giving Schaumburg a 3-2 edge. They tacked on another in the sixth with Brockett's run-scoring base hit to make it 4-2.
Mabry left the game after allowing just two runs in seven innings of work. He gave way to RHP Hideyoshi Otake, who threw a scoreless eighth inning. Clark Labitan then entered for the ninth and retired the side in order to pick up his sixth save of the season.
The Grizzlies bullpen did a solid job in keeping the game close once Richards left. LHP Kyle Bouman spun 1.2 scoreless frames while RHP Ross Spurgeon allowed just one hit in his scoreless eighth inning.
Heck paced the Grizzlies' offense with three hits. He collected a grand total of nine during the weekend series.
After a day off on Monday, the Grizzlies return to GCS Ballpark on Tuesday for the start of a six-game homestand that will wrap up the 2015 season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs on 101 ESPN's digital platforms and 1400 AM KJFF. Sam Levitt and Kevin Schaefer will call the action.
