Erie Otters News Release
The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League announced at a media conference this afternoon that they have teamed up with The Mario Lemieux Foundation in an effort to raise awareness and funding for cancer research.
The Otters and The Mario Lemieux Foundation will join forces during the Otters regular season finale on Sunday, March 15th at 4:30 p.m. at the Tullio Arena. The Otters will be wearing special green jerseys during the game against the Guelph Storm and the two teams will compete on green ice! In addition, fans will have an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for an autographed Mario Lemieux jersey and Lemieux Foundation memorabilia will be given away during the game. A portion of the proceeds from the Otters green jersey sales and the Lemieux autographed jersey raffle will be donated to the Lemieux Foundation.
"We are excited about our partnership with The Mario Lemieux Foundation," said Shawn Waskiewicz, the Otters Assistant General Manager, Administration. "Our goal is to have a positive impact on the Lemieux Foundation goals and assist them in their efforts to discover a cure for cancer while helping children."
The main objective of the Mario Lemieux Foundation is to fund promising medical cancer research projects being conducted by talented scientists. The Mario Lemieux Foundation has also established the Austin Lemieux Playroom Project, in honor of Mario and Nathalie Lemieux's healthy son who was born prematurely. Additionally, the Lemieux Foundation supports other organizations such as the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, the Leukemia Society and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
"We are very pleased the Otters have selected the Foundation to benefit from this exciting game," said Foundation Chairman Mario Lemieux, a National Hockey League Hall of Fame Member and current owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
"The game of hockey, and the individuals involved, have proven time and time again that in working together great things can be accomplished. In this case, the co-operation of the Otters organization will assist in our continuing efforts to find a cure for cancer."
