Evansville Otters News Release

August 7, 2009, Sauget, IL - In a very tight ball game Friday night in Sauget, Illinois, a two error eighth inning was the difference in the Otters 5-4 loss to the Gateway Grizzlies.

With Gateway leading 3-2 entering the bottom of the eighth, Charlie Lisk walked and stole second. A strikeout and a fielder's choice advanced him to third with two outs. Brandon Johnson hit a sharp ground ball to first baseman Matt Schneider, who took it off the chest. He then barehanded the ball and threw it away, allowing Lisk to score and Johnson to take second. The next man up, Danny Morrow, hit a groundball that Marcus Rose made a diving stop on. His throw sailed up the first base line though, and Johnson scored to increase the lead to 5-2. Both runs were unearned.

Eric Blackwell homered to right field to being the top of the ninth, and Frank Meade added a solo shot to center with two outs. With Evansville trailing by one, Josh Howard struck out to end the game. Starter Nick Utley (4-4) allowed three runs in six innings. The Grizzlies' Jamie Arneson (5-0) surrendered two runs (one earned) in six innings. Chris Wiman earned his seventh save despite allowing the two home runs in the ninth.

Schneider finished 3-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. Tyler Diamond was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. The three game series continues Saturday at 7:05pm CDT.
