River City Rascals News Release
O'FALLON, MO - Southern Illinois plated five runs in the seventh and six more in the eighth to erase a 7-1 River City lead for a 12-8 victory Thursday night in front of 2,708 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. The Miners captured the series victory and now are 5-4 this season against the Rascals.
Southern Illinois (38-30) sent ten to the plate in both the seventh and eighth frames against six different Rascal pitchers. Josh Lowey sandwiched two walks around a Landon Camp double to load the bases with no one out in the seventh. Josh Rose came out of the bullpen and Jereme Milons blasted his third grand slam of the season to cut the deficit to 7-5. Adam Hale singled later in the inning to make it a 7-6 game.
The Miners struck for six more in the eighth to push Southern Illinois out in front. Milons struck again with an RBI double and Tony Roth followed with a single to tie the game at eight off Brent Solich (1-1). Jake Edwards relieved Solich and walked Joey Metropoulos to put runners on first and second with one out. Brad Miller lined a three run home run to left and Adam Hale made it back-to-back shots for a 12-8 Miners advantage. It was the third straight game Hale had a home run.
The Rascals (38-30) again jumped out early on the Miners, scoring four in the first off Danny Zeffiro. Scott Robinson singled home JoJo Batten, who doubled with one out. After Zeffiro balked the runners to second and third, Ryan Groth was intentionally walked to load the bases. Danny Sawyer cleared the bases with a double on a 3-2 pitch for the 4-0 lead.
Sawyer struck again in the third with another RBI double, plating Groth who started the two out rally with a single. The Rascals pushed the lead to 7-1 on Scott Houin's fourth home run in the sixth.
Lowey went six plus innings for no-decision, allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks.
Nick Starnes (2-1) earned the win in his one inning of work, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts.
Metropoulos got the Miners on the board in the fourth, launching his third home run of the series to cut into the Rascals lead at 4-1. Metropoulos finished 2-3 with the homer and three runs scored. Milons went 2-6 with five knocked in and Tony Roth was 3-6 with an RBI.
Robinson had three hits for River City, his 25th multi-hit game this season. Sawyer drove in four on two doubles and Groth finished 2-4 with three runs scored, including his third home run in the seventh.
The Rascals continue their six game home stand tomorrow night when the first place Windy City ThunderBolts visit T.R. Hughes Ballpark for three games. With the Bolts win tonight, the Rascals now trail Windy City by a game and a half in the West. Dustin Pease (8-4) will go opposite Pablo Lopez (1-2) on the bump. Game time tomorrow is set for 7:05 p.m.
