Otters drop second straight to Roosters
September 1, 2005 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release
The Richmond Roosters scored in five different innings and all but ended the Evansville Otters slim playoff hopes with a 7-3 win over Evansville on Thursday morning.
Evansville got on the board first in the top of the opening frame. After Frank Scott reached on an error, he moved to second on a groundout. Two batters later, Beau Blacken singled home Scott to make it 1-0 Otters.
Richmond would rally however, putting two on the board in the first, one each in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to build a 6-1 lead.
Evansville would not crack the scoreboard again until the seventh when back-to-back errors opened the inning. Evansville would get one run on a sacrifice fly and another on a Brian McKenna double to make it 6-3.
The Roosters responded with a run in the seventh. After Nathan Gravely led off with a triple, Kevin White struck out. Batting with the runner on third and one out, Joe Rhomberg executed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to score Gravely and make it 7-3 Richmond.
Evansville had one last gasp in the ninth as they loaded the bases in the ninth with one out. However, neither pinch-hitter, Jason Mann, nor third baseman, Denver Stuckey were able to bring a run across.
Brian Kroll (6-5) took the loss for Evansville. Tony Casoli (8-6) won it for Richmond with Hunter Davis picking up the save.
The final game of the series is tomorrow night. It will be the final home game ever for the Richmond Roosters. Chris Pillsbury (7-7) will go for Evansville against Matt Schweitzer (6-9) for Richmond. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m. and can be heard on 91.5, WUEV.
