Rockford RiverHawks News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks will have to wait another day.
The RiverHawks failed to lock down a Frontier League playoff berth when they lost, 4-3, to the River City Rascals at Marinelli Field.
The âHawks also could have clinched if third-place Gateway lost to division-leading Kalamazoo. Instead, the Grizzlies edged the Kings, 5-4.
Brian Baron hit a three-run homer, his fifth of the year, off Brian Shallock in the fourth inning to account for the Rockford offense.
Tony Calderon was 3-for-5 for the Rascals. He led off the third with a double and scored as River City took an early 2-0 lead. He broke a 3-3 tie with a two-out single to left-center in the seventh inning.
Shallock (1-0) went six innings for his first professional decision. Pat Evers pitched two scoreless innings for his fifth save. Rockford starter Frank James (3-3) gave up 10 runs in 6 2/3 innings and took the loss.
The âHawks can clinch at 7:05 p.m. on Friday. Y-95 sponsors NASCAR Night. Tony Stewart's '98 rookie car will be at Marinelli Field along with drivers from Rockford Speedway.
The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
