Otters' Doubleheader Sweep Ties Most Wins in Single Season Franchise History

(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The first place Evansville Otters (54-34) swept a doubleheader from the Florence Freedom on Friday night with a 3-1 win in the opener and a 4-3 victory in the finale.

The 54th win of the year ties the 2004 Otters for most victories in single season franchise history. The doubleheader sweep marks the second time in the last three games that Evansville has won a pair of games on the same day. The two wins also keep the Otters a half-game ahead of the Southern Illinois Miners for first place of the Frontier League East Division.

Evansville leapt ahead 2-0 in game one. Outfielder Chris Sweeney hit a solo home run to begin the second inning, his 20th home run of the year, second most in single season franchise history. The Otters plated another run by way of an error later in the inning for the two run advantage.

Otters right-hander Trevor Walch pitched 4.2 innings, striking out nine in the no decision. Reliever Anthony Collazo (3-2) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for the victory. Closer Eric Massingham retired all three batters he faced in the seventh inning for his fifth save this season.

Florence started game two with a lead after scoring an unearned run off two errors in the opening inning. Evansville countered back in the bottom of the frame with a three-run home run from All-Star third baseman Shayne Houck, his Frontier League best 22nd home run of the season. The Otters added a fifth inning RBI double from Sweeney for the 4-1 lead.

Florence was held hitless by Otters pitcher Preston Olson until the sixth when Cole Miles led off with a single and scored on an RBI double from Buddy Sosnoskie. Reliever Evan Mott maintained the 4-2 lead with an inning-ending lineout of pinch hitter Rob Kelly. Florence plated another run in the seventh against reliever Eric Massingham to make it a one-run game but the closer for the final two batters out to complete the doubleheader sweep. It was Massingham's second save of the day and sixth of the season.

The third of four games this series will take place on Saturday night at Bosse Field. It is Eastland Mall Labor Day Weekend with first pitch set for 6:35 pm CDT. Righty Connor Little (2-0, 0.90 ERA) will start for Evansville against Florence righty Chuck Weaver (6-6, 2.43 ERA). Fans can call 812-435-8686for tickets.
