River City Rascals News Release

The Rascals took advantage of a late error by LF Adam Ford to edge the Lake Erie Crushers 3-2 in the opener of a three-game set at T.R. Hughes. Ford's defensive miscue allowed a hustling Saxon Butler to score the go-ahead run in the Rascals' 57th win of the summer.

Tim Koons took to the mound for the Rascals to start, and despite giving up leadoff hits to the Crushers in the first, third, and fourth innings, kept a shutout going into the sixth. The righthander was mostly strong, and though he ended up with a no-decision, did turn in a quality start for River City.

His offense broke through in support in the second inning. Curran Redal drove a two-out double off the monster in right in that inning to score Hector Crespo from first. The Rascals would add another in the fourth when Brian McConkey sent an opposite-field solo blast to left off Crusher starter Zac Treese to make it 2-0. It was McConkey's eleventh homer in a Rascal uniform in less than forty games.

Unfortunately, the Crushers would plate two in the sixth to tie it up. Both runs in the inning were credited to Koons, who allowed a leadoff double to Trevor Stevens. Stevens would score on an RBI single by Andrew Davis. Koons would then allow another base hit, this one to Anderson Hidalgo, before turning things over to Nick Kennedy. Kennedy allowed two singles and one of Koons' runners to score. But he then got the Crushers to strand the bases loaded by striking out Emmanuel Quiles and Ryan Hutchison and then getting Adam Ford to bounce into a fielder's choice to end the frame.

The Rascals scored once in the eighth to nudge back ahead. Saxon Butler reached with one out by lining a base hit to center, then moved to second on an infield single by Joe Staley. Brian McConkey then came to the plate and lifted what appeared to be a routine fly to left field. Adam Ford misplayed it though, and Butler was able to race around third and score the go-ahead tally.

Gabriel Shaw pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his twenty-sixth save of the summer and secure the win for River City. With the win, the Raskies keeps pace with the Boomers. Both teams have identical 57-34 records and are tied atop the Western Division.

The second game of the Rascals' three-game set with the Crushers will be played at 7:05 Saturday at T.R. Hughes. It is fan appreciation night and seats are still available. To purchase tickets contact the River City Rascals box office at (636) 240-BATS or by visiting www.RiverCityRascals.com.
