SAUGET, IL. - The Gateway Grizzlies (49-42) led 2-0 heading into the ninth inning at GCS Ballpark, but the Washington Wild Things (53-47) scratched across two runs in the ninth and got a run in the tenth to beat Gateway, 3-2.

Grizzlies' starting pitcher Tyler Thompson (3-4) was brilliant through seven innings Friday night, allowing only four hits and striking out seven batters. He gave way to Brett Zawacki who pitched a scoreless eighth inning in front of a paid attendance of 3,605.

In the ninth, the Wild Things put on the tying runs after back-to-back hits from Ryan Kresky and Seth Kalamar against Gateway closer Richard Barrett. After a strikeout, Washington's Carter Bell hit a ground ball to shortstop that nicked off the glove of Grizzlies' shortstop Michael Johnson and trickled into left field. The error plated two runs and tied the game at 2-2.

In the tenth inning, lefty Luke Westphal walked four batters and allowed a run, which gave Washington a 3-2 lead. Wild Things' closer Jonathan Kountis pitched a scoreless bottom half of the tenth and picked up his league-leading 30th save.

The Grizzlies' offense got the scoring started in the second inning against Washington starter Shawn Blackwell (10-4), as TJ Bennett cruised across home plate on a double play. Gateway picked up another run off Blackwell on Garrett Vail's base hit in the seventh inning.

Washington reliever Al Yevoli, who picked up his fifth victory of the year, pitched a scoreless two innings in relief of Blackwell.

With the loss, Gateway sits 4.5 games behind Washington for a Frontier League playoff spot, while they still remain 2.5 games behind Lake Erie. There are five games remaining in the regular season.

The Grizzlies and Wild Things play the second game of a 3-game set on Saturday night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. CST at GCS Ballpark.
