Joliet Slammers News Release

The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy- knocked off the Frontier Greys by the score of 6-3 on Friday at Silver Cross Field.

Frontier broke a scoreless tie in the top of the 4th inning when they took a 3-0 lead against Slammers starter Matt Costello. Frank Florio's single drove in 2 runs and then an RBI single from Zach Tanner ended their scoring. Joliet answered back with a 6-run 7th inning to take control of the game. Frontier starter, Mark Bellcastro, pitched very well into the 7th, allowing no runs on three hits to that point. Chris Epps led of the bottom of the 7th with a walk, Josh Scheffert singled and then the count went to 2-0 on Adam Lewis. At that point Bellcastro called to the trainer and had to leave the game with an apparent arm injury. Paul Mittura came into the game at that point for the Greys and he had a rough inning. Lewis completed his at-bat against Mittura and drew a walk to load the bases. Max Casper hit a sacrifice fly to put the Slammers on the board. Seth Granger singled and an error on the play helped score a run to make the score 3-2. An Adrian English single plated 2 runs to give Joliet at 4-3 lead. Grant DeBruin's RBI base hit then made it 5-3 and a Chris Epps RBI grounder closed out the Slammers scoring and that made the lead 6-3. DeBruin's single now gives him his 2nd 14-game hitting streak of the season. His RBI is now a team-leading 57 on the season.

Costello threw a season-high seven innings and allowed 9 hits and just those three runs, with one walk and two strikeouts to earn the win. He is now 3-1 with three quality starts out of four tries. David Kubiak pitched the final two innings and earned the save. He did not allow a hit and struckout two while not walking a batter. He is now 6 for 6 in save opportunities. Kubiak has now thrown 11 2/3 straight scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

In the middle of the 8th inning, the Slammers gave away $750 to lucky fan, Ashley Higgins, as part of their Amazing August/September promotion. Each home game the remainder of the season will see one fan go home with at least $250 dollars. The higher that night's attendance, the higher the payout will be. The payout on Friday, August 1st to a lucky winner was $5000.

Joliet continues the series with the Frontier Greys with Saturday's 6:05pm game, which is also a Fireworks Night as part of the holiday weekend.
