Evansville Otters News Release
Evansville, Ind. - The Evansville Otters would like to congratulate former Otter George Sherrill on his selection to the 2008 Major League All-Star Team. Sherrill began his professional career for the Otters in 1999 and 2000, with 114 2/3 IP, 94 strikeouts, 52 walks, and a career 4.08 ERA. Sherrill spent his first few years in independent baseball before, in 2003, his contract was purchased by the Seattle Mariners and he was sent to AA San Antonio. After securing a spot in the bullpen with the Mariners by 2006, Sherrill was traded to Baltimore before the 2008 season.
"We are happy and proud for George and his family", said league commissioner Bill Lee. "His persistence and dedication is a shining example to all Frontier League players."
Sherrill is the second former Frontier League player to be named to Major League Baseball's All-Star team (Brendan Donnelly, 2003). Sherrill was named the closer for the Orioles out of spring training, and has thrown 37 1/3 innings so far this season, going 2-3 with a 3.64 ERA and 27 saves with 38 strikeouts. Sherrill ranks second in the Major Leagues in saves (27), and is on pace to break Baltimore's all-time single-season saves mark (45), set by Randy Myers in 1997.
