Austin Bruins News Release

The Austin Bruins (23-9-11) needed overtime Friday to put away the Minnesota Magicians (15-26-1) 4-3, after giving up three different leads against their nearby rivals at Riverside Arena in Austin.

Although Austin controlled the momentum for much of the first period, Magicians goalie Vaughan Ahrens (Plymouth, MN) was up to task. Ahrens, who had missed over two months with a knee injury, stopped 13 of 14 Bruins shots.

The one that beat him was the last one of the period. Trevor Boyd (Muskegon, MI) received a head-man pass from Jake Arroyo (Bolingbrook, IL) and Boyd walked the Magicians defender, before sniping a shot by Ahrens with 11.9 seconds left in the period.

Nolan Schaeffer (Marshall, MN) tied the game on the power play at 15:11 of the second period. After a Tony Uglem (Moorhead, MN) tripping penalty, Schaeffer ripped a shot off the post from the top of the circle and in behind Bruins goalie Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN).

Jade Miller (Minto, ND) gave Austin the lead back 1:49 later in front of the net. Miller caught a pass between the circles and with a spin-o-rama, slid a shot through the five-hole of Ahrens make it 2-1 Bruins at the second intermission.

Again, Minnesota had an answer. Brady Heppner (Crookston, MN) tapped in a one-timer on a 3-on-1 rush 4:18 into the third period to even the score at 2-2. Miller would strike again though for his first career two-goal game. The rookie center collected his own rebound off the side of the Magicians net and on a backhanded wraparound, lifted the puck over the right pad of Ahrens.

Magicians newcomer Connor Bucsis (Saskatoon, SK) tapped in a loose puck sitting at the edge of Kielly s crease to tie the game yet again at 13:17 of the final frame. For the second game in a row this week, the Bruins saw a third period lead slip away en route to overtime.

After Josh Wilkins (Cary, NC) was hooked by Sam Becker (Eagan, MN) going to the net, the Bruins won the game on their fifth power play opportunity of the night when Uglem fired the deciding goal past his old team at 2:49 of overtime.

Kielly stopped 20 shots in the win, and Ahrens saved 34 in the loss, as the two teams meet three more times in a row. The Bruins lead the season series 5-0, and the all-time series 9-0.

Tomorrow s rematch will be in Richfield, with game time scheduled for 7:15pm at the Richfield Arena. The two teams will skate again next weekend in a home-and-home series. Friday, February 6th, the Bruins will travel to the twin cities. Saturday, February 7th Austin hosts Paint the Rink Pink Night, the annual event to raise money for Breast Cancer Research.
