Lancaster Stormers News Release
Dan Osterbrock's season keeps getting better.
The left-hander threw 7 2/3 shutout innings on Wednesday night to pick up his third straight win, a 5-1 Lancaster Barnstormers' victory over the Sugar Land Skeeters at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
It was the fourth win in five tries for the Barnstormers on their current homestand, moving Lancaster into a third place tie with the Skeeters in the Freedom Division.
Osterbrock (3-1) retired 21 of the 23 batters he faced over the first seven innings. He yielded a one-out double lofted down the left field line by Kevin Russo in the third and hit Beamer Weems leading off the seventh.
His teammates gave Osterbrock all the support he needed in the third. Brandon Jones, playing for Lancaster for the first time since 2011, grounded a one-out single up the middle and moved up on a ground out by Lance Zawadzki. Yusuke Kajimoto flared a base hit into center, scoring Jones, and took second on Willy Taveras' offline throw to the plate. Tyler Bortnick looped a single out of the reach of second baseman Amadeo Zazueta to knock the second run across, and Blake Gailen slammed his fourth homer in six days for the 4-0 cushion.
The Barnstormers did nothing else off Sean Gallagher (0-2) in the Sugar Land right-hander's seven innings of work.
Patrick Palmeiro singled to open the eighth, and Zazueta followed with a walk. Osterbrock struck out the next two batters, his third and fourth whiffs of the night, but Taveras kept the inning alive with a single into center against a 1-2 offering.
Cody Eppley was summoned from the bullpen and got the final out on one pitch.
The Barnstormers tacked on the final run on a double by Kajimoto and single by Bortnick in the bottom of the eighth.
Eppley allowed a run in the ninth on a walk to Delwyn Young, double by Chris Wallace and an infield out by Russo. Following a two-out walk to pinch hitter Dustin Martin, Eppley was replaced by Nate Reed for the final out. Reed earned his first save of the year.
The series concludes on Thursday night with Marcus Walden (0-1) on the hill for the Barnstormers against former Lancaster right-hander Matt Wright (2-0). It is Salute to Veterans Night with the gates opening at 4:00. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.
