Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
LANCASTER, Pa. - The Sugar Land Skeeters were tagged with four early runs in a 5-1 loss to Lancaster at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The loss drops the Skeeters to 10-16 while the Barnstormers improve to 10-16.
Skeeters' starter Sean Gallagher gave up four runs in the bottom of the third. After getting a one-pitch lineout from Kevin Rivers, Brandon Jones reached on a single before moving up to second on a groundout from Lance Zawadzki. As the Barnstormers turned over their lineup, Yusuke Kajimoto notched a base-knock and moved up to second on the throw, driving in Jones to break the scoring seal. Tyler Bortnick picked up the third hit in the inning, driving in Kajimoto on a single before Blake Gailen blasted a two-run home run to stake Lancaster to a 4-0 advantage.
Sugar Land posted it's only real threat in the top of the eighth, bringing the tying run to the plate in Beamer Weems. Patrick Palmeiro belted a single and Amadeo Zazueta drew a walk before back-to-back strikeouts left the Skeeters in dire straits. Willy Taveras recorded his fourth-hit in four games with the Skeeters to load the bases. Weems was unable to get the ball out of the infield, however, as Taveras was out at second on a grounder to short.
Lancaster added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame off reliever, Robbie Weinhardt. Kajimoto doubled to open up the inning and came in to score on a single by Bortnick. Lancaster would go on to load the bases against the former Detroit Tiger, but a strikeout and a huge 4-6-3 double play limited the damage to just one run, going to the final frame.
The Skeeters scratched across a run in the top of the ninth, but it was too little, too late for an offense that mustered just one hit through the first seven innings. Delwyn Young drew a leadoff walk and moved up to third after Chris Wallace blasted a double in to the alley. Young would come in to score on a groundout from Kevin Russo and Dustin Martin drew a walk, moving the tying run to the on-deck circle. Making a pinch-hit appearance Denny Almonte concluded the game with a popup to first, ending the Skeeters chance.
