Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots (17-7) clobbered the Bridgeport Bluefish (13-11) 11-0 Wednesday afternoon from TD Bank Ballpark in game one of a day-night doubleheader.
In the bottom of the first inning Somerset erupted for eight runs on seven hits as 12 men came to the plate. Center fielder Jonny Tucker laced a RBI double and would score on a throwing error by center fielder Nick Van Stratten. Catcher James Skelton and left fielder Aharon Eggleston each tallied two RBI singles. Shortstop Scott Kelly legged out a RBI infield single while third baseman David Vidal socked a RBI double.
Somerset plated a pair of runs to make the score 10-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Second baseman Greg Hopkins roped a RBI double while right fielder Nate Spears hit a RBI sacrifice fly.
The Patriots added another run in the home half of the fourth inning when Hopkins bounced into a double play that allowed designated hitter Mat Gamel to score increasing the lead to 11-0.
Paul Smyth earned the win (1-0) pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Shairon Martis suffered the loss (0-1) as he lasted two thirds of an inning while giving up eight runs on seven hits.
The 2015 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue this evening when the Patriots remain at TD Bank Ballpark for game two of the day-night doubleheader against the Bridgeport Bluefish.
