Orlando City SC News Release
ORLANDO, Fla. - Orlando City SC has acquired $300,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money from LAFC, it was announced today. In exchange, City has traded midfielder Sebastián Méndez. The Lions will receive $225,000 in 2023 GAM and $225,000 in 2024 GAM if certain contract conditions are met, and will also retain a portion of Méndez's future transfer fee should the midfielder be dealt.
"We want to thank Seba for the effort and dedication he's shown us throughout his time here in Orlando," said EVP of Soccer Operations and General Manager Luiz Muzzi. "He's been an incredibly important player for us these past three-and-a-half years, both on and off the field. He joined us as a young player back in 2019, with belief in the project we were building and made the commitment to join us despite having multiple clubs pursuing him. We wish him nothing but the very best and look forward to seeing all he achieves as he moves forward with his career."
Méndez, 25, joined the Lions ahead of the 2019 Major League Soccer season, appearing 83 times in that span, 59 of which were starts, providing one assist and scoring his lone goal for City on Decision Day 2021 at CF Montréal to help push the Lions to their second-consecutive Audi MLS Cup Playoffs appearance.
Méndez's contract with Orlando City was set to expire at the end of the 2022 MLS season.
Transaction: Orlando City SC receives $300,000 in 2022 General Allocation Monday in exchange for midfielder Sebastián Méndez. City will receive $225,000 in 2023 GAM and $225,000 in 2024 GAM if certain contract conditions are met.
