The Orioles today announced that they have acquired minor league right-handed pitcher RICK VANDENHURK from the Florida Marlins in exchange for LHP WILL OHMAN. VandenHurk has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk and JOSH BELL has been recalled from the Tides. A corresponding move will be announced tomorrow to fill Ohman's spot on the 25-man roster.
VandenHurk, 25, went 8-4 with a 4.68 ERA (98.0IP, 51ER) and 87 strikeouts in 19 starts with Triple-A New Orleans this season. He appeared in two games for the Marlins, allowing one earned run in 1.1 innings pitched. Entering 2010, VandenHurk was 19-20 with a 3.48 ERA (351.2IP, 136ER) in seven minor league seasons and 8-9 with a 5.96 ERA (155.2IP, 103ER) in 35 career major league games (32 starts) over four seasons.
Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Marlins on November 14, 2002, VandenHurk is the 5th Netherlands-born player to appear in the majors since 1900.
Ohman, 32, pitched to a 3.30 ERA (30.0IP, 11ER) in 51 appearances (2nd in the American League) in his first season with the Orioles.
