Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves rallied to defeat the Toledo Mud Hens 9-6 in the opener of their four game series on Saturday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. The G-Braves trailed by 3 runs midway through the 4th inning, but scored in 4 straight innings to snatch the victory and tie their season-high winning streak at 5 games. The G-Braves (51-56) remain 16.0 games behind International League South leaders Durham in third place, and 6.5 games of Wild Card-leaders Louisville. Toledo (53-55), also in the bottom of their division, is 12.0 games behind IL West leaders Columbus.
It Was Over When: The G-Braves took the lead on some sloppy defensive play in the 6th inning. After Joe Thurston, playing left field for the first time this season, singled to lead off the inning, he stole second base and advanced to third on an errant throw by Toledo catcher Max St. Pierre. As Thurston slid into third base, another off-line throw into the photographer's pit allowed Thurston to trot home for the go-ahead run to make it 7-6. Gwinnett never looked back.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: RHP Todd Redmond started the game, going 5.0 IP and allowing 5 R/ER on 5 hits in the no decision. RHP Michael Broadway (1-0) went 2.0 IP in relief, yielding a R/ER and striking out 1 batter to earn his first career Triple-A win. RHP Stephen Marek went 1.0 IP of scoreless relief, and has not allowed a run in 25.0 IP - a season high. Closer Craig Kimbrel shut it down for his 14th save of the season.
At the plate: DH Barbaro Canizares went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, and has now knocked in an RBI in a season-high 5 straight games. Second baseman Diory Hernandez was 4-for-4 with 2 RBI, extending his on-base streak to 26 games (tied for a team high with Freddie Freeman) - the longest current streak in the IL.
The opposition:
On the Mound: Toledo LHP Ryan Ketchner started and went 4.2 IP, allowing 6 R/ER on 9 hits. RHP Scott Drucker (4-5) went 1.1 IP and allowed 3 R/1 ER in the losing effort.
At the plate: Right fielder Ben Guez finished 1-for-2 with a HR and 2 RBI.
On Deck: Gwinnett continues their season long 12-day, 12-game homestand tomorrow afternoon, trying to stay unbeaten against Toledo (5-0 this season against the Mud Hens) at 2:05 p.m. The G-Braves will send RHP Chris Resop (6-2, 1.72 ERA) to the hill against LHP Charlie Furbush (0-1, 9.00 ERA) for the Mud Hens. The game will be broadcast on the radio at WDUN-550 AM.
