Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release

Reeses Berberet and Javier Guevara hit home runs as the Grand Junction Rockies beat the Orem Owlz on opening night 9-4 Friday at Suplizio Field.

Berberet's long ball came in his first professional at bat and it was part of a six-run first inning that answered the Owlz unearned run in the top of the first. Brett Stephens reached on an error and scored on Christopher Navarro's RBI double. After Drew Weeks singled home Navarro, Berberet went deep on the second pitch he saw. Franklin Garcia knocked home Todd Czinege and then the Owlz third error of the inning made it a 6-1 game.

Orem scored a run in the fourth, but with two out in the bottom of the inning, Guevara took Jon Malmin deep on a 3-2 pitch. The Rockies didn't score again the rest of the night, but they didn't need to.

Alfredo Garcia started and left after three batters in the fifth. He was charged three runs, two earned over four innings, but the Rockies bullpen trio of Moises Ceja, Reagan Biechler, and Shameko Smith held Orem to just one unearned run over the game's final five innings.

Berberet had three hits, while Weeks, Guevara, Garcia and Jeff Moberg had two.
