Osprey Fall on Opening Day to the Mustangs

MISSOULA, MONT - The Missoula Osprey fell 6-5 at the hands of the Billings Mustangs to open the season Friday night at Dehler Park.
Missoula struck first on the second at-bat of the season when Brandon Leyton drove a solo shot to left field to put the Osprey on top 1-0. The lead last until the third when Billings brought home its first two runs of the season. Raul Wallace led off with a single and then stole second. Carlos Rivero lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game, and Mariel Bautista ripped a triple to left-center to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Zack Shannon was hit by a pitch and Eddie Hernandez doubled to get the inning underway. Zachery Almond singled in Shannon to tie the game at two. The big offensive outburst for the Osprey was provided in the sixth when they scored three runs.
Shannon led off with a walk against relief pitcher Matt Pidich, and Hernandez followed with a double. Shannon was out at the plate on the throw home, but Almond doubled for his second hit of the night to score Hernandez and give the Osprey a 3-1 lead. Joe Robbins barreled up a triple, scoring Almond. David Sanchez reached on a fielder's choice to score Robbins and give the Osprey a 5-2 lead.
However, Billings struck in the bottom of the frame to pull within one on a two-run homer from Pabel Manzanero. The Mustangs put two more runs on the board in the eighth when Manzanero and Jay Schuyler singled in a run apiece. The Osprey were retired in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.
Jeremy Kivel earns the win for the Mustangs, while Yeison Santana is pegged with the loss. Almond and Hernandez each finished 2-4 for the Osprey. Five of the team's six hits were extra base knocks.
First pitch at Dehler Park is slated for 6:05 p.m. with the Mission Paint Pregame Show beginning at 5:45 p.m. on ESPN 102.9 and the MiLB First Pitch App.
