January 22, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Ontario Reign News Release
Ontario, CA - The Ontario Reign, proud American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL), take on the San Jose Barracuda tonight at 7:00 PT at Citizens Business Bank Arena on $2 20-ounce Beer Friday. Tonight is the fifth of 12 meetings between the two teams this season.
Sommer's Sights Set on Record:
San Jose Head Coach Roy Sommer (635 wins) is one win away from tying the AHL all-time coaching wins record set by Fred "Bun" Cook. Cook grabbed 636 wins over 19 seasons (1,171 games) from 1937-56.
Top Teams Clash:
The Ontario Reign (1st, Pacific Division) and San Jose Barracuda (2nd, Pacific Division) meet for the first time tonight as the top two teams in the division. San Jose shot up standings after going on a nine-game point streak (7-0-2-0) and five-game winning streak from December 30-January 16.
Protect Home Ice:
The Reign have won all three home-ice meetings against the Barracuda this season and hold a 3-1-0-0 head-to-head record. Their lone setback came on November 1 in a 4-2 decision in San Jose.
Homestand Closes:
The Reign wrap up a five-game homestand tonight and hold a 3-1-0 record during that stretch. After tonight, only one home game remains in January (Jan. 30 vs. Manitoba) after the Reign entered the month facing a season-high 10 home contests (5-3-0 January home record).
Dowd Continues to Roll:
Forward Nic Dowd enters tonight's game on a four-game point streak (four goals, one assist) and has 10 points (five goals, five assists) in his last seven games.
Mersch Back to his Old Self:
Since returning to the Reign on loan from the Kings, forward Michael Mersch has one goal and four assists in four games including a three-point performance (one goal, two assists) last Wednesday in a 4-1 win over Manitoba.
