Chaput Lifts Monsters in 2-1 OT Win
January 22, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - In front of 9,284 fans at The Q, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters claimed their first overtime win of the season on Friday by virtue of a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals. With the win, the Monsters improved to 21-14-4-3 overall this season and with a .583 points percentage, remain alone in fifth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
Milwaukee claimed a 1-0 lead on Friday when former Monster Stefan Elliot stuffed home a power-play goal at 9:01 of the opening period. Then, as time wound down in the middle frame, Lake Erie defenseman Steve Eminger finished off an even-strength goal, his first in a Monsters uniform, at 19:51 of the period on feeds from T.J. Tynan and Michael Paliotta.
After a scoreless final frame, the Monsters finally broke the 1-1 tie at 3:54 of overtime when freshly reassigned left wing Markus Hannikainen, sent to Cleveland by the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets earlier in the day on Friday, muscled a centering feed from the left circle to Lake Erie center Michael Chaput, who powered home his ninth goal of the season and claimed victory for the Monsters by a 2-1 final score.
Brad Thiessen earned the win in net for the Monsters thanks to a 22-save performance, while Milwaukee's Marek Mazanec took the tough-luck loss despite making 21 saves of his own.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Saturday rematch vs. the Admirals with full coverage underway from The Q at 1:00 pm on ESPN 850 WKNR and simulcast on WUAB Cleveland 43 and the Monsters Hockey Network.
